TWO NEW MALAITA MPs SWORN-IN

The two winners of last Thursday’s by-elections of Malaita Province’s Aoke – Langalanga and East Malaita Constituencies have been sworn-in on Tuesday 31 March 2008 at Parliament House.

The newly elected MPs are Mathew Cooper Wale who won the Aoke Langalanga seat and Manasseh Maelanga who won the East Malaita constituency.

Mr Wale more than 1500 votes and won by a margin of over 500 votes against his runner-up Mr Billy Manu who polled a little over 1000 ballots.

In East Malaita, Mr Maelanga polled more than 1000 votes ahead of his runner-up, Mr David Toifai Misitomu who polled more than 700 ballots.

Reports from election officials said that the voter turn out was good, about 70 percent for Aoke Langalanga and 60 percent for East Malaita implying a participation of more than 15,000 registered voters in the by-elections in both constituencies.

A total of ten candidates contested the Aoke Langalanga constituency by-election while East Malaita has a total of 11 candidates.One woman stood for election in each of the constituencies.
