PARLIAMENT OFFICE ATTENDS PACIFIC PARLIAMENTARY EFFECTIVENESS INITIATIVE MEETING

MONDAY 5TH FEBRUARY 2018

The National Parliament Office (NPO) attended the UNDP Pacific Parliamentary Effectiveness Initiative (PPEI) strategy meeting, the meeting took place from 29 to 31st January 2018 in Suva, Fiji.

The UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji is implementing a 3-year, New Zealand Funded project to develop parliamentary effectiveness (PPEI). The project is being implemented in 4 countries – PNG, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Cook Islands.

During the 3 days the beneficiary parliaments under PPEI, New Zealand’s MFAT and UNDP engaged in a number of meetings including:

  • Bilateral and country-specific meetings between each beneficiary parliament and UNDP;
  • A general round-table between NZ MFAT, UNDP and all beneficiary Parliaments reporting on 2017 and agree on future priorities; and
  • A one-day south-south experience sharing seminar for parliaments’ clerks and deputy clerks, with participation of the Parliament of Fiji. (South – South is a term used to describe the exchange of resources, knowledge, and technology between developing countries).

National Parliament of Solomon Islands has benefited from the partnership with PPEI, activities conducted in 2017 with support from PPEI include.

  • seminar for MPs on the “National Development Strategy, Climate Change, Climate financing and risk informed development”;
  • the participation of the PAC Chair and Committee Clerk at the 5th Annual Public Accounts Symposium & Professional Certificate in London; and
  • the 1-month attachment of Principal Procedures Officer with the New South Wales Parliament.

Also attending the strategy meeting were Clerks and Deputy Clerks from Tonga, PNG, Vanuatu, Fiji and Cook Islands. The National Parliament Office was represented by the Deputy Clerk Mr. David Kusilifu and the Human Resources Manager Mr. Ian Rakafia.
